  • About

Hi,

I’m Joseph Mackereth, a wayfinding designer, educator, and researcher based in the Philadelphia area. My work focuses on how people understand complex environments, and how wayfinding systems can support orientation, memory, decision-making, and navigation.

As part of Merje Design, I help institutions solve navigational challenges across campuses, civic environments, healthcare settings, cultural destinations, and other complex public places. My independent studio and research practice extends this work through writing, teaching, analysis, and design advisory grounded in cognition, environmental legibility, and systems thinking.

I earned my BFA from Tyler School of Art and my MALS in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hollins University. I’m a member of the Cognitive Navigation Group, Data Visualization Society, and SEGD. Outside of work, I enjoy camping, hiking, and spending time with my wife and daughter.
