Hi,
I’m Joseph Mackereth, a wayfinding designer, educator, and researcher based in the Philadelphia area. My work focuses on how people understand complex environments and how wayfinding systems can support orientation, decision-making, and navigation.
As part of Merje Design, I help institutions solve navigational challenges across campuses, urban environments, recreation sites, cultural destinations, and other complex public places. My independent studio and research practice expands on this work through writing, teaching, analysis, and design advisory grounded in systems thinking.
I earned my BFA from Tyler School of Art and my MALS in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hollins University. I’m a member of the Society of Experiential Designers and Data Visualization Society. Outside of work, I enjoy camping, hiking, and spending time with my wife and daughter.
Places & Projects
Over the course of my career, my work has taken me to a range of environments across the United States. Over time, these places have shaped the way I think about navigation, information, and the experience of moving through space. This map highlights selected projects and locations that have informed that ongoing process of learning and observation.
